Those who walk beneath it rarely suspect that this passage guards one of the most captivating unfinished dreams of Renaissance Rome: a bridge meant to join the two banks of the Tiber, and never built.<\/p>\n

Via Giulia, the street willed by Julius II<\/h2>\n

Via Giulia owes its name to Pope Julius II della Rovere, who around 1508 had it laid out, entrusting the design to Donato Bramante, then architect of the new St Peter\u2019s. It was to be the straight spine of a renewed Rome: a ceremonial artery, so rectilinear that it was also called Via Recta<\/em>, conceived to gather offices and courts a step from the Vatican. It was one of the first great works of urban planning in papal Rome, and to this day it keeps that severe, ordered elegance.<\/p>\n

Grand designs never completed<\/h2>\n

Not everything Via Giulia imagined came to be. Of the monumental Palace of the Courts, willed by Julius II and designed by Bramante, only the imposing rusticated travertine base remains \u2014 affectionately renamed by Romans \u201cthe sofas of Via Giulia\u201d. Work was halted as early as 1511 and finally abandoned at the pope\u2019s death in 1513, and for centuries the street preserved that mark of an interrupted ambition: proof that in Rome even the grandest visions live alongside what time leaves unfinished.<\/p>\n

The Farnese dream of a bridge<\/h2>\n

The most evocative of these missed chances bears the name of the Farnese, one of the most powerful families of the Renaissance. From their palace, overlooking the Regola district, they entertained the idea of reaching the gardens they owned across the Tiber by means of a private bridge suspended over the river. The bridge was never completed: it remained a drawing, a wish. What recalls it, still today, is the arch that spans Via Giulia \u2014 raised in the early seventeenth century for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese and linked by tradition to that older design. Draped in ivy, it has become one of the most beloved and photographed corners of the city.<\/p>\n
